Seek First To Understand, Then Be Understood

“Seek first to understand, then be understood”. This is actually habit #5 in Steven Covey’s book 7 Habits of Effective People, he shares some really good examples of how we can often times bring in our own “stuff” when engaging in communication with another person.

I don’t know about you, but I can think of times whether it’s been a mom, a wife, a sister, or a coach where I hear what the person is saying and go right into my own judgments or trying to “fix” and not to understand. We can create compassionate communication when we do seek to understand, shifting our perspective outside our own ego and into our hearts to really hear what they are saying.
